New Grade 1-8 Families:
The New Parent Buddy program matches interested volunteers with new Heath parents in Grade 1-8 to help these new families acclimate at Heath and welcome them to our community.
For “parent buddy” volunteers, this will entail a three-month commitment from the time of the new family arrival. This generally involves contacting new parents over the summer or in September and meeting if possible before school, answering any questions, encouraging them to attend the Back to School Barbecue, checking in with them once a month and meeting up at a Fall get-together. For mid-year arrivals, it means connecting parents to various school communications, following up with their children’s room parents to make sure an appropriate welcome has been made for the children and parents, encouraging them to come to any school events i.e. PTO meetings, and making an effort to answer any questions parents may have about life at Heath from drop-offs to lunch accounts.
Please note that there is no expectation on the part of the host or new family that your children become friends -your children may not necessarily be in the same classes. The “parent buddy’s” job is to reach out specifically to the new parents. A simple welcome phone call and a friendly face on/before the first day of school or the first week they arrive are very comforting to a new family, especially in the older grades. Please contact Nancy Donahoe at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested in this program (last year’s volunteers are welcome to sign up again!).
