The Heath Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) is a group whose membership automatically includes every parent of a Heath School student. Our primary objective is to “improve the education and educational environment at Heath”. We work closely with the principal, teachers and staff of the school to achieve our goals through a number of different activities and events that revolve around
- promoting excellence in education
- helping underserved segments of our community
- building a stronger community
- supporting ongoing community service
- facilitating communication between parents, and between the school and parents
Each year we conduct a few major fund-raising activities to support these endeavors.
There are numerous ways to be involved with the PTO, whether it is through organizing a committee, flipping burgers, engaging performers or populating a spreadsheet! We welcome all parents to become active members – you have the opportunity to pursue a passion for the benefit of your children, to engage more fully with the educational life of your kids, and to have fun and make friends in the process! Some of the events we run annually include a Welcome Back Barbeque for the entire school community; monthly First Friday Coffees with the Principal to which all parents are invited; a Book Fair; International Night; and of course the festive Mayfair! We have a Diversity Committee, a Social Action Committee, a Community Garden and an environmentally oriented committee (Go Green!), which implement many different events in order to educate the children and raise awareness of specific issues.Among our other significant efforts: we publish La Chispa/The Spark literary magazine for the school filled with the students’ work; support the Understanding Disabilities program of the school district; lead middle school children in preparing dinners at Ronald McDonald House; offer discounted tickets to cultural events, publish the school directory; and maintain an active website and distribute weekly updates on happenings at Heath.
Students benefit from the undertakings of the PTO in many ways. A small sample of what is funded by the PTO would include transportation for field trips, reimbursement to teachers for classroom supplies, academic resources, performances for students, author visits, poetry workshops, family math night, science day, gallery night and enhancements to technology. Our fund-raising is comprised of two primary activities: an Annual Appeal and the community-based Mayfair, with some additional funding coming from smaller activities throughout the year.
Structurally we are a non-profit organization with 501(c)3 status. The officers of the PTO are the co-Presidents (who serve for a 2 year term), the VP/Secretary (1 year term) and co-Treasurers.The Executive Committee of the PTO is comprised of the leaders of the various committees. We are governed by a set of bylaws, and hold at least two open meetings per year, typically a PTO Welcome Meeting at the beginning of the school year, in the evening, and an End of Year Election Meeting in June, in the morning.Officers attend a monthly Parents’ meeting with the Brookline School Superintendent, and work closely with the district on non-recurring events and issues such as principal searches, school construction and the implementation of the anti-bullying policy.
Please consider becoming an active member of the PTO! We seek to continually grow and improve. We welcome new ideas and faces! If you would like to get involved in a PTO activity, feel free to contact any officer or member of the Executive Committee.
